We Get Who We Are.

We Get Who We Are.

“Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become.” — Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn’s words remind us that success is not something we chase. It’s something we attract by aligning with who we truly are.

Our identity, the core of how we see ourselves, shapes our decisions, actions, and, ultimately, the results we achieve in life.

When we focus on becoming the person we need to be, success follows naturally.

In this week’s newsletter, we will explore how understanding and transforming our identity is key to unlocking lasting change and achieving the success we desire.

The Logical Levels of Change

Robert Dilts’ Logical Levels of Change is a model that helps us understand how personal transformation occurs, starting from the most fundamental internal aspects and extending outward to our external environment.

The model outlines six levels of change:

  1. Purpose / Vision – The deeper meaning or mission that drives everything we do.
  2. Identity – Who we believe we are, shaping our self-concept and actions.
  3. Values and Beliefs – The principles and convictions that guide our choices.
  4. Skills and Capabilities – The abilities we develop to achieve our goals.
  5. Behaviors – The actions we take based on our identity, beliefs, and skills.
  6. Environment – The external factors and conditions that influence our behavior.

At the heart of this model is the idea that identity sits just beneath purpose / Vision.

While purpose gives us a reason for change, identity defines who we are in the process.

When we transform our identity, aligning it with our purpose, we unlock deeper levels of personal growth. This makes identity central to lasting change—who we are ultimately determines the success we attract.

Identity: The Core of Change

Identity is the key driver of lasting transformation. While many people focus on changing their behaviors or developing new skills, these changes are often temporary unless they align with a deeper shift in identity.

True, substantial change happens when we redefine who we believe we are at the core.

When our identity evolves, our beliefs, actions, and even the environment around us naturally follow suit. Without this internal shift, any external change is likely to be short-lived, as we revert to the habits and behaviors that align with our old self-concept.

This brings us back to the central idea: We get who we are. When we see ourselves as confident, capable, and successful, our actions begin to reflect those qualities.

We approach challenges with resilience, make decisions from a place of strength, and naturally attract opportunities that match this elevated identity.

The world responds to who we believe we are, and when we embody the identity of success, we start to experience success in every area of our lives.

Practical Example: Leading Through Identity

Consider the example of identifying as a leader.

When you truly see yourself as a leader, your decisions, actions, and even your surroundings start to align with that identity. This includes every choice you make, from how you communicate with others to how you approach challenges.

This stems from the belief that you are someone who leads with purpose and confidence. Your environment, the people you engage with, and the opportunities that come your way all begin to reflect this internal shift.

By embodying the identity of a leader, you naturally start to lead, attracting the success and influence that come with it.

Personal Reflection – Who Are You Becoming?

Take a moment to reflect on your current identity.

Ask yourself, How is my self-perception shaping my outcomes?

The way you see yourself directly influences the results you experience in life. If you’ve been struggling to make lasting changes, consider whether your current identity aligns with the outcomes you desire.

Are you seeing yourself as the person you need to be in order to achieve your goals?

To see real, lasting results, challenge yourself to align your identity with your greater purpose.

Remember, change doesn’t begin with actions. It starts with who you choose to become.

When your identity shifts, everything else falls into place, and the transformation you seek becomes a natural extension of who you are.

Think of the Logical Levels of Change as a flow chart, starting with purpose at the top and working down through identity, values, and so on, ending with the environment.

Like water flowing downhill, it’s much easier to create lasting change when you start from the top.

If you try to change your environment or behaviors first, you may see some progress, but without addressing the deeper levels of identity and purpose, that change will be short-lived.

By working from the top down and starting with your identity, everything else naturally follows.

It’s not just about changing what you do but about changing who you are at the core.

How I Can Help You Achieve Lasting Change

In my Executive Coaching Service, I help business professionals identify the level of change they need to focus on, whether it’s at the identity, purpose, or behavioral level.

By listening closely to your words, observing your behaviors, and seeing your results, I can quickly pinpoint where the real shift needs to happen.

If it’s at the core of who you are—your identity or purpose—then we’ll work on aligning that first.

If it’s about values, beliefs, habits, or behaviors, we’ll address those too.

Lasting change doesn’t come from surface-level tweaks but from transforming who you are.

If you’re ready for that kind of transformation, I can guide you through the process to achieve permanent, meaningful results.
