It’s Not What You Do, It’s How You Do It!
I got my first taste of this concept in teaching my very first yoga class
I just arrived in Vietnam after spending 4 weeks on the Island of Koh Samui, Thailand. It’s such a lovely getaway Island. Now a certified yoga teacher after 4 weeks of intense learning and training.
I have already practiced yoga as a student for the past 10 years and was ready to turn my hand to teaching.
An owner of one of the yoga studios, in Ho Chi Minh City, gave me a break and allowed me to teach my first class at his studio to get me started. I was so excited and nervous at the same time.
Well…
I thought the yoga class went relatively well considering it was my first time as a teacher. Then I overheard someone comment in the change room, they said, “I will not come back to this class again…”
It’s Not What You Do, It’s How You Do It!
12 years later, I’m still teaching yoga, as a side gig, to my main profession as an Executive Master Coach. I love yoga, I love to teach, and the benefits I receive physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually are outstanding.
Listen up.
I’m still teaching yoga, BUT, how I teach it has changed! Fitness buffs and students love to attend my class and enjoy the EXPERIENCE I give them during each session.
How do I do it?
It all starts from the moment I walk into the class to the time I leave the studio. It’s a very conscious practice of mine to give the students the best experience ever.
To be honest with you, there are other yoga teachers out there who are more flexible, can achieve greater depth in their postures, who look better than me when in a yoga pose.
They are better than me in the postures, BUT, I excel in HOW I DELIVER THE EXPERIENCE. It’s not what you do It’s how you do it.
There are many techniques that I use from being fully present, making eye contact, and acknowledging every student before the class starts. I modulate my voice, give students permission to do only what they can do on any particular day.
I introduce myself to new students and encourage them to do their best, their main goal is for them to stay safe and enjoy the experience. The words I use are carefully selected and are only positive and encouraging no matter what transpires during the session.
I allow my students to be right and do everything in my power to ensure they enjoy their yoga experience. Due to the way I communicate with them, I can inspire them to dig deep and perform at their very best, even surprising themselves.
Because of the way I do it, at the end of the class, the students have enjoyed a good physical workout and their minds are as still as an icy lake in the middle of winter with zero breeze.
It’s not what you do, It’s how you do it!
Creating Flow and Reducing Resistance in Your Life
You can achieve the same positive outcomes and success in any and all areas of your life when you focus on HOW YOU DO IT!
How are you currently moving through the world?
I apply the same principle in all the other areas of my life and I get similar results. I increase the flow in my life and reduce/eliminate the resistance.
It’s what I teach my Executive coaching clients who are facing challenges both professionally and personally. Change the way you do it. Show up differently.
Your job is to start to focus on how you are doing life, notice where there is resistance, and discover ways to do it differently, reduce resistance, and create win/win outcomes. You need to find the order and sequence, words, and actions that create flow and positive outcomes in your life.
You need to learn how to dance with life and not go through life, like your driving battle tank.
When you change the way you operate in the world and show up, the world will change for you.
