Leadership in Business – Law of The Lid
Leadership in Business – Law of The Lid. John Maxwell wrote the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, and in that book, the first law, the very first law, is the law of the lid. I really love this law of the lid and when you understand its impact, you just may start to focus on your business/career from a completely different perspective.
So, what is the law of the lid?
Leadership in Business – Law of The Lid
If you were asked to qualify yourself, honestly, as to what level you currently are operating as a leader, what score would you give yourself? Let’s develop a scale of 1 to 10. Number 1, you have just entered the field of leadership and have a lot to learn. Number 10, you’re an awesome leader and have spent decades growing effectively in leadership positions and achieving outstanding results.
On this scale of 1 to 10, what number are you right now in terms of leadership capabilities?
Give yourself a true and fair appraisal before you take it to the next step.
Ok great, let’s say you are a number 5 in leadership capabilities. Your level of leadership has a lid of number 5. Everything you’ve learned and applied has got you to a number 5.
Understand this, listen up.
As a business owner and a No 5 leader, my company can only grow and develop as a No 4 company and no higher. If I’m a No 5 leader, I’ve capped my company’s growth with my leadership lid. My company can not rise above my leadership capabilities.
It’s the same with attracting other leaders. I will only attract level 1,2,3,4 leaders as my leadership capabilities are No 5, and that’s my leadership lid, it can’t be exceeded.
How do I grow and expand my business?
Very simply or not, I need to raise my leadership lid. I need to increase my capabilities in leadership and take it to a 6,7,8 or even a 9 or 10.
Once I raise my own leadership lid, and in this case, for example, take it to a No 7, it will create a vacuum that will need to be filled.
- I will attract Leaders at a 5 and 6 capabilities level.
- My business now will be able to expand and grow to a 5 or 6-size company.
It’s a fact, that higher levels of leadership and the expansion of our company, can’t exceed our own leadership lid.
The focus now needs to be on what will I do to increase my own leadership lid, so I can lead my staff and company in an upward, expanding direction.
One of the key messages I teach in my Leadership Communication Training is that WHEN WE CHANGE OUR WORLD CHANGES.
