Mental Health And COVID19Mental Health And COVID19

Mental Health And COVID19. COVID19 has very much disrupted our lives on many different level’s and I believe it would be safe to say that it won’t be leaving us anytime soon.

As a result of the initial shock, impact and possible longevity of COVID19 in our lives its very important we manage and control our mental health.

When an almost Biblical disruption takes place like this there is an abundance of FEAR & ANXIETY that runs wild like a raging bush-fire during the scorching heat of a mid-summers day. If we continue to entertain those 2 negative emotional, FEAR & ANXIETY, it activates our Reptile brain and keeps us in fight or flight mode.

Fight or flight mode can be good in the short term, to keep us safe, but for an extended period of time it will have a serious detrimental impact on our physical and mental health.

Mental health and COVID19…

During this time we have 2 main worries

  • Practical worries…
  • Hypothetical worries…

Practical worries: Are more real and need our immediate attention. Making sure my family and I are safe, washing hands, social distancing, reduced social activity, have a place to live, feed my family, educate my children, keep my business profitable, maintain my employment…

Hypothetical worries: Are those thoughts we entertain in our head that may or may not happen. In many cases our hypothetical worries never happen or it’s never as bad as we make it out in our heads. Some examples are: what will happen if I get sick or someone I know dies or how can I make an income or what happens if I lose my job or my business fails or what if my salary is reduced or will I be able to travel back to my home country again or….

One Solution to Reduce Fight or Flight Mode & maintain physical & mental health:

Start to identify and become aware of your thinking and your thoughts. Which thoughts are practical or hypothetical worries?

The thoughts we give the most focus and energy will multiply and grow in our mind and possible reality.

Give more attention to the practical thoughts and take immediate action towards them. These are actions we can respond to in the immediate present moment and will keep us active and definitely will reduce our stress levels.

Starve your hypothetical thoughts for now, these are areas of our life where we really have no control about what could happen because there are so many variables and unknown factors.

Focus on the NOW, contract ourselves to a safe place with less stress and worry and as things become more clear we can expand out again with safety and confidence.

Our job is to not live in the fight or flight mode for long periods of time because that will reduce our physical and mental capacities to take the right action when it is time.
