How To Handle An Upset Work Colleague Or Customer. What’s your first reaction?….

Depending on your mindset or thinking it could be to react and push back, taking the anger personally and starting to defend yourself…

Is that right?…

When we uncover the finer distinctions within our communication we begin to realise that it’s not so much about us as it is about the other person….

A really great question to ask ourselves is:

What is this person thinking or experiencing that they feel like they have to behave and act in this manner?….

Have they reached their limit, their capacity, overwhelmed with their work and just don’t know what to do, so they react as a last resort….

The anger and frustration is more about them and their ability to cope and angry with themselves…

We just happened to be standing in front of them when they lost control….

Having empathy and a mindset of understanding their suffering and calming them down would be a great start…

Stay focused, their display of anger is about them hurting and trying to handle the situation, nothing to do with us….

Have you ever come home from work one day and you just said something very simple and neutral to your partner and they reacted in a very mean or angry way?…

It’s what we don’t see under the surface of the other person that reached a limit and has nothing to do with us…

Then you find out they had a tough day at work and had a number of stressful situations to deal with….

Not about us, it’s about them…

Very simply, don’t react….

Take a deep breath, settle them down and find out what’s really going on, under the surface….

Life becomes much easier when we stop taking things personally and take some time to answer the question, what are they going through for them to speak and behave in this manner?
