Approximately 12 months ago I came to the realization that I wasn’t happy with my own performance as a leader, and it was starting to get to me. Facing the many cross cultural communication challenges that you do when you work abroad, I was becoming frustrated and irritable as the toolbox that had served me well for many years was not working for me now. My messages weren’t being understood and my coaching was only having minimal impact.
Having an external coach gave me someone to share my challenges with in an environment that allowed me to speak freely and openly in a non-judgmental, confidential environment. The ability to reflect so honestly on what had happened, including my own performance, really allowed me to get to the bottom of problems.
Once we got to the bottom of problems Paul and I were able to construct a playbook for similar scenarios moving forward. Most importantly the playbook was developed in collaboration with my own thoughts and experience which gave me clarity and plenty of confidence to execute improvement immediately.
Now I can confidently say that the extent of my frustrations has drastically reduced as I have evolved my leadership style while finding new ways to coach my team to lift their ability simultaneously.
