Happiness is a STATE OF BEING Not a Goal
Happiness is a State of Being Not a Goal. If we want to get into a state of happiness all we need to do is close our eyes and associate it with a past happy memory or feeling.
We can go back in time in our mind to the wonderful holiday on the beach in France when we first got married. We bring up in our mind those lovely pictures of the coastline, smelling the fresh salt air and tasting it on our lips as we feel the warmth of the sun shining on our back.
Voila – I’m happy.
This can create a happy state of being in seconds, it’s almost instantaneous.
We don’t need to go through the goal-setting process to bring up a state of being and experience it in our body and mind.
A goal requires specific steps and takes time.
If I want to buy a new car there are numerous steps that are necessary to complete before I achieve my goal and get my new car.
- Decide on the type of car
- What’s my budget
- How will I pay for it (finance/loan /cash)
In my Executive Coaching Service, I have noticed a tendency of some clients to blur the lines between states of being and their goals.
For example:
Have you ever said one of the following?
- When I find the love of my life I WILL BE HAPPY
- When I get my new car I WILL BE HAPPY
- When I get the promotion I WILL BE HAPPY
- When I start my own business I WILL BE HAPPY
- When I get married I WILL BE HAPPY
- When I have more money I WILL BE HAPPY
Linking our happiness to a material object or an external event is a bad strategy (Strategy is one of the modules in our Leadership Communication Emotional Intelligence Training).
Material objects and events are always changing. Linking our happiness to them will cause our happiness to fluctuate.
So, If I want the state of being of happiness, how can I have it now, if you say I can have it immediately?
How To Develop The State of Being of Happiness
“We are what we practice all day long”
Sometimes clients will come and sit down in my office and tell me that they don’t want to be so angry. They tell me that they are sick and tired of being angry all the time.
They ask me, what can I do to stop being so angry?
My first reaction to that question is, STOP PRACTICING ANGER.
“We are what we practice all day long”
So I ask them a question, what do you want? Usually, after a big silence, they will say, I want to be happy! Ok then, start practising happiness and stop practising anger.
If we don’t practice happiness NOW, in the present moment, we will never have happiness in the future. What is the future? The future is another present moment when it arrives.
If I don’t practice happiness NOW, in this present moment, I will never have the psychological muscle of happiness in the next present moment.
That’s why if we link happiness to an external material product, the happiness will be short-lived because I never built the psychological muscle of happiness.
Do you know some people who are always happy? No matter what’s happening in their lives they are primarily happy.
They have obviously practised happiness on a regular basis in the present moment and now it’s a powerful and positive program they run most of the time.
To make practising happiness easier for some people, they may need to remove the 4 clouds from their lives that could be an obstacle to their happiness. The 4 clouds are,
- Negative Thinking
- Negative Emotions
- Inner conflict
- Limiting beliefs
One of our Entrepreneur clients who attended our recent Leadership Communication Emotional Intelligence Training was plagued with negative thinking and negative emotions.
After taking him through some of the 8 interventions we use during the training he removed the 4 clouds and now enjoys,
- Positive Thinking
- Positive Emotions
- Wholeness
- Empowering Beliefs
So in conclusion, whatever state of being you want to experience, happiness, love, joy, passion, excitement, peace, calmness, etc…START PRACTICING IT NOW.
Once we are living in that state of being, we then can get to work and create the relationships, businesses, finances, and whatever else we need to live and enjoy an abundant life.
