Why EQ Outweighs IQ Every Time!
In our professional life, whatever career we have chosen, we obviously have sufficient IQ (Intelligent Quotient)to do the job. When we apply for a new position, it’s taken for granted that we have the IQ to get the job done, correct? Most sane people wouldn’t apply for the position if they didn’t have the IQ to perform the position and its requirements.
Now, IQ may very well get us the job, but EQ (Emotional Quotient) will be the determinate as to how successful we are in the job and how long we can keep it.
High IQ, Low EQ
Helen and Jane are 2 dentists who work together at a dental surgery on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. They have both been full-time practitioners for a number of years. They are both competent in their profession, they have the IQ to do a great job.
There is one anomaly. Helen has a full book of clients most weeks, while Jane is almost struggling to get clients. They are both good dentists but their results and experience are completely different.
When we dig deeper we discover that Helen has developed her EQ, her people skills, and her ability to build rapport, and communicate and influence her clients trumps that of Jane.
Helen knows how to greet, entertain and make her clients feel valued, loved, and appreciated. Helen has empathy, patience, and good humor, and she is very good at controlling her emotions and outward behavior.
Helen has developed and worked on her EQ which is very much appreciated by her clients. Even the staff in the dental surgery love Helen and find her motivating, inspiring, and very easy to work with. Helen has done the work by building her Emotional Intelligence and it’s showing up in her positive results.
Jane still has her own level of EQ but it is underdeveloped compared to that of Helen.
IQ (ability to do the job) is a standard that we must have to do the job. The level of EQ (how we do the job) determines our level of success and longevity in the job.
How many people do you know in the corporate world who are very intelligent (IQ) but whose people skills (EQ) are almost non-existent? They are difficult to work with, don’t control their emotions, no one wants to work with them, they demotivate team members, and they find it very hard to run a productive team.
Listen up.
