Corporate Success; Just Promoted.
John is a computer technician, computer programmer, and a real computer nerd. He loves his job and is a master at writing code and understanding all the finer details to do with anything in the backend of a computer.
He has been working for the same company for over 10 years and is enjoying corporate success with his outstanding results, and wage increases and everyone really likes him. He spends his whole day diving into detail, solving technical problems, and coming up with solutions.
His day just flies by, from morning to evening, sitting in the same chair for almost 8-10 hours a day. John is in the zone of his competence and is loving it. He is the master of his domain.
Board of Directors
The board of Directors, where John works, has known of his outstanding performance for some time now. An opportunity has surfaced for someone to be the manager of the IT department in which john works.
Because of John’s exceptional skills in IT, it was a no-brainer for the Board of Directors to offer him the position of IT Manager, responsible for 30 IT programmers and technicians.
Just Promoted
John took the position of IT Manager and was enthusiastic about the success he would create in this new role.
Well….Long story short, it was a disaster.
Within 6 weeks of taking over the new position, John was in too deep. He was suffering from high levels of stress, couldn’t sleep at night thinking about work, and colleagues were upset and angry with John because of the way to was speaking and treating them. The output started to slow down, they were behind schedule and mistakes started to show up that were causing further delays.
The harder John worked the worst the situation became. John was in, over his head.
The Problem
The problem that John was going through was no stranger to corporate business life.
When John was promoted to his new role, the new role required extra skills and capabilities over and above the ones he already displayed.
Being a master with technical skills works well when you are a technician. Now in the new role (IT Manager) John’s technical skills now become his liability in the new role.
John now needs EQ skills and capabilities, in how to manage a team, how to motivate your team, and how to instruct and communicate to his team, management, partners, suppliers, and customers.
John just did not have the skills that the new role required, hence John’s stress and disastrous consequences.
Corporate Success; Just Promoted
“What got me here, won’t get me there” …
When we are promoted to a higher position, in most cases, it will require us to learn some new skills and capabilities to be successful in the new role. If we don’t take action and be proactive to learn those new skills and capabilities, we are heading for turbulent times and possibly setting ourselves up for failure.
Employers have the obligation to furnish their just promoted staff with training and or coaching to raise the odds of creating a win/win for everyone.
Just recently one of my clients referred to me as one of their staff members who was just promoted. She was promoted to office manager and was responsible for 2 sites and 5 colleagues.
Our coaching sessions revolve around the new EQ (Emotional Intelligence) skills needed for her to fulfill and be successful in her new role.
If by chance your employer, for some reason, does not furnish you with training or coaching for the new position, you will need to be proactive and educate yourself, and seek support, if you want to succeed in your new role.
Summary
The biggest factor in our success in most cases is not our IQ. We have the IQ to do the job otherwise we would not be in the position or in the company. The defining factor of our success is our EQ. How do we communicate to ourselves, manage our own emotions, and have the ability to manage the emotions and motivation of our colleagues, upper and middle management including subordinates?
What I love about EQ, is that there is no real limit as to how far we can grow and develop it. EQ is the game-changer in our success.
Each new position we are elevated to will require new skills and capabilities for us to learn to be successful in the new role. Most of those skills and capabilities revolve around our EQ (Emotional Intelligence), managing people.
