People Come First and Work Comes Second.
People Come First and Work Comes Second were the words that floated from my lips during a conversation the other day. It wasn’t really planned yet those words appeared and were out in my reality.
Now that I have mentioned, people come first and work comes second, where do I go from here? Do I want to believe that and what are the consequences / benefits of having such a belief?
Upon further reflection I remember another conversation with a business associate and we were talking about how work was an opportunity to bring people together to learn, grow and have a mutually enjoyable experience.
Yes, in any business we want to produce high quality goods and or services and deliver them to the customer in a timely, professional and most cost-effective way.
In all the coaching I have completed over the years, working with Executives, C-Level Managers, Line Mangers and staff members there is one thing that always is the center of attention when there is a challenge.
What would you guess that one common denominator is in most challenges in the work place?
Yes, that’s correct, it’s the human element.
Number 1 – How do I get myself to move and function and get my job done – Self Communication.
Number 2 – How do I get other around me to cooperate, follow instructions, and perform at exceptional high levels of output – Communication to others.
In many cases there is a combination of both 1 & 2 in challenges in the work place.
So, what does all of this have to do with people come first and work comes second?
Understand this…
When we can master the art of communication with our work colleagues, family and friends the work at hand will definitely take care of itself.
Stop.
Imagine….. Just imagine in the workplace that your Mindset was to take care of your fellow workers and colleagues.
Imagine… Just imagine if all your communication towards your work colleagues was thoughtful, pleasant, considerate, empowering, positive, gentle, cooperative, fun, enjoyable.
Imagine… Just imagine if your work environment was so supportive and safe that it was such a pleasure to be at work that you could do your best work…
In the Navy Seals, special forces, sporting teams, each player has his partners back. They all watch out for each other, they will go down first before any of their team members.
When we change our Mindset to make sure people come first and work comes second, the work will be completed, on time, high quality work, on budget and you will have raving customers for life.
When you create a positive and safe environment for staff, family or friends they are then in a position to do their best work.
Many of us did not attend communication classes or learn how to communicate with others, other than from our parents and caretakers when growing up.
When teaching simple yet very effective communication techniques to employees, all of a sudden they are more relaxed, their results start to climb and they are getting more cooperation and things done in a much shorter time with less effect.
